Success Stories Summary:
Between 1990 and 2002, BASF reduced absolute greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 38 percent and by 61 percent per unit of product. By 2020, BASF’s goal is to achieve a further 25 percent reduction in its specific GHG emissions per metric ton of sales product compared with 2002.
Internal Operations summary:
BASF is further developing its internal energy efficiency system in which substitute fuels used in power plants can be used in certain production plants, enabling minimization of natural gas consumption and improvement in the capacity utilization of combined heat and power plants. BASF maintains 16 cogeneration plants that run in power plants worldwide with an overall efficiency of almost 90 percent and producing around 75 percent of electricity needed. BASF’s goal is to improve the energy efficiency of its production processes by 25 percent compared with 2002.
