4B. GHG Emissions by Sector

In the year 2004, the United States emitted over seven billion metric tons of greenhouse gases (CO2E). Greenhouse gases are emitted by all sectors of the economy, including industry (30% of total), transportation (28%), commercial (17%), residential (17%), and agriculture (8%).  In this figure, greenhouse gases from electricity generation have been allocated to the end-use sector.  These total emissions have been increasing over time; to see the trend, go to figure 4C.
